My Uncle Jeff has a couple printing presses, a pottery wheel, and a lot of plants.
Print + Design
My Uncle Jeff is a printer and designer. There are computers involved in the work, but the fun machines are a couple presses from the 1950’s.
The Heidelberg Windmill Platen Press operates semi-automatically and has the ability to print on thick paper. It’s made to print smaller stuff like business cards, invitations, and stationery.
The Vandercook No. 4 Proofing Press is used for posters, art prints, and book projects. It is hand cranked and good for projects with smaller quantities.
Both are made for Letterpress printing, a type of relief printing that can put impression into paper. The presses print one color at a time, using modern photo-polymer plates, old school moveable type, and the occasional linoleum/woodcut block.
My Uncle Jeff has printed with these types of presses since 2012, using them to produce an enormous amount of business cards, wedding invitations, small packaging, and other ephemera.
Most of the projects have been completed while working at Genghis Kern Design & Letterpress, where he manages the pressroom, operates the presses, and does graphic design.

Pots + Plants
My Uncle Jeff is also an amateur potter with a Thomas Skutt wheel, a few classes under his belt, and a patient partner.
The house is filled with mismatched vessels that usually end up as a home to a lucky house plant or used as tableware until they break.
One day he will try to sell some pots and plants, but not today.
